And we left out the most important part-/the painter herself, after being raped, and tortured to admit she was lying about the rape NEVER CAVED!!!! She stood her ground and she’s an icon cuz of it, not just her skill!!

I was lucky enough to see the real original Bronzino this week. There is an immense amount of subtley, particularly in the blending that screens and small images cannot capture. The figures are not far short of actual life size.

Thank you very much for bringing out the difference in art between the two periods so clearly. I have read texts which talk about these differences but your video has provided the clarity I was looking for. Thanks for having enhanced my knowledge.

Did they explain how they come to the conclusion its painted by his students ? Looks like it could have been painted by himself as he often paints two versions of the same .... The only other person with such finesse to paint at such level of nuances is the other member of the big 3 painters, Raphael ... (nope not Michelangelo, as Michelangelo's tones and line works are not as nuanced and intricate as Davinci's)

Excellent topic. IMHO, it is understandable that in that moment the Church decided to cover the nudity. However, nowadays this would not be so shocking as it was then, therefore Volterra's cover up should be erased so we can now appreciate the artwork as Michelangelo intended it to be.

Excellent video, Analisa! I'm looking forward to the rest of the series! As for my opinion on the censorship controversy, I am not a big fan of censorship, but in this case I don't think it affected the overall message or meaning of the painting at all. Anybody can still figure out what's happening here. And while someone painting over an original Michelangelo would be considered a horrible act of vandalism today, back then he was still a living working professional artist. I'm guessing that neither he nor his work were regarded with the same worshipful reverence that they are now. And (speaking of "reverence"!! ) - while I have already said that I don't like censorship, I still have to wonder how Michelangelo could have imagined for one second that 16th century Catholics were going to tolerate a naked Virgin Mary over the altar of a church. Maybe he got her confused with Aphrodite. I dunno. 😅

A big difference was that the italians, particularly in the high Renaissance often painted nude figures, many times of pagan subjects. Neither was common in the north.
